Starting therapy can feel like stepping into the unknown. Many people wonder what actually happens in their first therapy session and how the process unfolds afterward. Understanding what to expect can ease anxiety and help you make the most of your experience. This post explains the typical flow of a first therapy session, what therapists focus on, and how therapy usually progresses.

Our intake team will create a chart and send you all the necessary paperwork prior to the start of care. Fill this out in advance so your therapist can review your completed chart in advance of your first session. For in person session, upon arrival, you will find a tablet in the lobby to check in on. This notifies your Grow Through Life Counseling therapist you have arrived in our lobby and they will be out to greet you shortly.
What Happens in Your First Therapy Session
Your first Grow Through Life Counseling therapy session is mostly about getting to know each other and setting the foundation for your work together. Your therapist will focus on understanding your background, current concerns, and goals.
Building Rapport and Trust
Therapists know that trust is essential for effective therapy. They will spend time creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable sharing. This may involve:
Introducing themselves and explaining their approach and credentials
Asking about your reasons for seeking therapy
Listening carefully to your story without rushing
Assessing current symptoms you are experience
Taking history to inform diagnosis
Creating a treatment plan to get you feeling better soon
The goal is to help you feel supported, connected to, heard and respected from the start.
Gathering Important Information
Your therapist will ask questions to understand your situation better. This includes:
Your personal history, such as family background and major life events
Current challenges or symptoms you are experiencing
Any previous therapy or mental health treatment
Your strengths and coping skills
This information helps the therapist tailor their approach to your needs.
Setting Goals Together
Therapy works best when you have clear goals. During the first session, you and your therapist will discuss what you hope to achieve. These goals can be broad, like feeling less anxious, or specific, such as improving communication skills. Setting goals gives your sessions direction and purpose.
What to Bring and How to Prepare
You do not need to prepare extensively for your first session, but a few things can help:
Write down your main concerns or questions
Think about what you want to get out of therapy
Bring any relevant medical or mental health records if available
Remember, it is okay to feel nervous or unsure. Therapists expect this and will guide you through the process.
What Therapy Sessions Look Like After the First Visit
Once the initial session is complete, therapy usually moves into a more focused phase. Here’s what you can expect next:
Regular Sessions with a Clear Structure
Most of your therapy sessions last 53 minutes and happen weekly at the start of care for minimum of 8 sessions. You will work collaboratively with your therapist to assess needs once care begins and some people stay weekly for many months and others make transitions to less frequent care once initial goals are met. Your Grow Through Life therapist will check in on your progress, explore your thoughts and feelings, and teach strategies to cope with challenges. Insurance benefits support monthly care (maintaince) for up to a year after treatment goals are met ensuring ongoing support after goals are met and for the long term.
Different Therapy Approaches
Therapists use various methods depending on your needs. Some common approaches include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to change negative thinking patterns
Psychodynamic therapy to explore unconscious influences
Humanistic therapy focusing on personal growth and self-awareness
Your therapist will explain their approach and adjust it as you progress. Most of our Grow Through Life Counseling therapist will use a variety of tools and interventions from multiple theoretical approaches. If you have questions about these, please ask your therapist as we welcome sharing the information and it's critical your treatment plan is addressing your needs.
Homework and Practice
Many therapists assign tasks or exercises to practice between sessions. This might include journaling, mindfulness exercises, or trying new behaviors. These activities help you apply what you learn and build new skills.

Common Concerns About Starting Therapy
It is normal to have questions or worries about therapy. Here are some common concerns and helpful facts:
Will I have to talk about everything?
You control what you share. Therapy is a gradual process, and you can set boundaries. If you aren't ready to discuss certain things, please share this with your therapists. This may come later or at different pace and that is okay.
What if I don’t feel a connection with my therapist?
It’s okay to try a few therapists to find the right fit. A good match improves results. We have a large team at Grow Through Life Counseling. If you don't feel it's a great fit after the intake, you can let our intake team know and a clinical leader will reach out to you get more information and get you scheduled with a new provider.
How long will therapy take?
The length varies. Some people find relief in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term work. All our clients are invited to stay for onoing maintaince care which is great way to keep skills learn and mood stable. This is for a year after treatment goals are met.
Is therapy confidential?
Therapists follow strict privacy rules. Your information stays private except in rare cases involving safety concerns.
